Abstract:
Food adulteration is a silent global threat, undermining consumer confidence, endangering public health, and disrupting fair trade. With increasingly sophisticated methods of fraud, conventional detection techniques often fall short in addressing these complexities. Advanced molecular technologies, including DNA barcoding, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and next-generation sequencing (NGS), have emerged as transformative tools in the fight against food fraud. These methods provide exceptional accuracy, capable of identifying adulterants even in highly processed or intricate food matrices. Complementing these are advanced analytical tools — including electrochemical sensors, spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry — which offer rapid, sensitive, and often portable solutions for on-site detection and confirmation. Beyond detection, they enhance traceability, validate authenticity, and fortify the global food supply chain against contamination and fraud. The adoption of these cutting-edge approaches is fueled by their unmatched sensitivity to trace adulterants, adaptability to new challenges, and alignment with global demands for transparency and accountability. As supply chains grow more interconnected, these technologies are pivotal in meeting regulatory requirements and restoring public confidence. By integrating molecular biology and advanced analytical technologies, the food industry can establish robust systems that safeguard authenticity, ensure safety, and promote ethical trade practices.
