Screening of antibiotic residues and quantitative estimation of oxytetracycline residues in chicken’s egg

Abstract:
Poultry, especially chicken are exposed to a vast array of xenobiotics during their lifetime. Some of these xenobiotics can be excreted in the chicken egg, leading to several toxicological implications for both of egg consumers as well as chicken embryos. Antibiotics are class of chemicals that frequently used in the chicken industry and might be excreted in the egg. The aim of this study was to screen antibiotic residues in three kinds of chicken egg, namely, balady, commercial and organic eggs using the microbial inhibition method. In addition to quantitative estimation of oxytetracycline, one of the most commonly used antibiotics in the chicken industry, residues in the egg using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The obtained results declared that the commercial chicken eggs collected from layers’ farms had both the highest incidence of antibiotic residues as well as oxytetracycline residual concentrations followed by organic eggs and balady eggs. The commercial eggs had violative concentrations of oxytetracycline residues than the maximum permissible limits set by Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO)/ World Health Organization (WHO). The adverse health effects of antibiotics on both human and chicken embryos were discussed.
