Abstract:
Cronobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic, food-borne pathogen that causes serious diseases and deaths in children. To the best of our knowledge, This is the first work that evaluated infant formula and other dairy products consumed by infants for the presence of Cronobacter sakazakii in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt. Also, we evaluated the possible role of the MALDI-TOF MS system as an accurate and rapid method for Cronobacter sakazakii identification by comparing it with the conventional biochemical tests. The results cleared that Cronobacter sakazakii was detected in 14.3%, 40%, and 6.25% of the contaminated starting from birth IFMP, follow up IFMP, and rice pudding samples, respectively. On the other hand, microbiological analysis of the samples cleared high contamination levels and the presence of Aeromonas hydrophila. The present study enlightens the presence of high danger for infants consuming these contaminated products, thus hygienic precautions and effective control measures should be applied.
