ANTIBIOTIC RESIDUE LEVELS IN CAMEL, CATTLE AND SHEEP TISSUES USING LC-MS/MS METHOD W. R. El-Ghareeb1,2, Z. Sh. Mulla1, A. M. A. Meligy3,4, W. S. Darwish2 and A. M. However, the unregulated use of the antimicrobials may lead to several adverse health effects, such as development of multidrug resistant microbial strains, allergic and anaphylactic reactions. Saudi Arabia is one of the major countries in Middle East and Arabian Peninsula with a drastic increase in the livestock production. However, there is a clear lack of information about the current situation of antimicrobial residues in meat and edible offal intended for human consumption in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, this study screened the residue levels of nine antimicrobials with the most common use in Saudi Arabia veterinary medical field. These antimicrobials were enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, tylosin, erythromycin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, sulfamethazine and sulfaquinoxaline. The tested samples included muscles, livers and kidneys of camel, cattle and sheep slaughtered at Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. Antimicrobial residues in the tested samples was quantitatively estimated using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Sulfamethazine was detected at higher levels compared with the maximum residual limits (MPL) established by the regulatory authorities. Therefore, the effect of different cooking methods on sulfamethazine residues was investigated. The achieved results indicated occurrence of antimicrobial residues in the examined samples at levels below the recommended MPL, except for sulfamethazine that was detected at higher levels. Six antimicrobial residues were detected in samples collected from sheep; however, only three antimicrobials were detected in camel and cattle. Efficient heat treatment of the meat contaminated with sulfamethazine significantly reduced the residue load of sulfamethazine. In conclusion, efficient cooking of meat and observing the withdrawal periods of different antimicrobials are advisable to reduce human exposure to antimicrobial residues via meat consumption. مكان النشر: The Journal of Animal and Plant Sciences, August (2019).

Despite these health benefits, the safety of sheep and camel meat may be compromised by the presence of heavy metals. The monitoring of metal concentrations is therefore important to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and consequent consumer protection. This study was undertaken to estimate the toxic metals (lead, cadmium and arsenic) and the essential trace elements (copper, zinc and iron) contents in the edible tissues (muscle, livers and kidneys) of both camel and sheep slaughtered at Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. The dietary intake and human health risk assessment of the examined metals due to consumption of these tissues by Saudi population were estimated. The results indicate that the tested metals were detected in all the tissue samples with variable concentrations. Residual concentrations of all examined metals were within the maximum permissible limits set by European Union, Food and Agricultural Organization except for the arsenic. Human health risk assessment revealed that the detected concentrations of cadmium and lead might not possess health hazards. Characterization of progesterone profile, physiological responses, milk composition and blood biochemical and hematological indices at the early stage of lactation in goats. Mahmoud S. Abstract The aim of this research was to describe the progesterone profile, physiological response, milk composition, and blood chemistry at the early stage (DIM 30-90 days) of lactation (E1:30-50; E2:50-70; E3:70-90 days) in Baladi goats under Egyptian conditions. The serum progesterone level was significantly reduced with the progress of the early lactation period to reach the least concentration (0.24 ng/ml) at the E3 stage of lactation (P=0.001). The daily milk yield was significantly increased with the progress of the lactation to reach the peak at the E2 stage of lactation (P=0.015). The percentage of milk fat was significantly decreased with the progress of the early lactation period (P=0.032). However, the percentages of total solids and SNF were significantly increased in E2 and E3 stages when compared with the E1 stage (P=0.001 and 0.018, respectively). The serum glucose and total antioxidant capacity were considerably reduced with the progress of the lactation period (P=0.047 and 0.039, respectively). In conclusion, Baladi goats showed a decreased serum progesterone level with the progress of the early lactation period and produce milk with a relatively stable protein and lactose contents. Furthermore, Baladi does able to maintain the stability of most blood biochemical parameters during such period.

Abstract The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), carp pituitary extract (CPE), melatonin, and adrenal gland extract (AE) administered either separately or in combination on the induction of testicular maturation and spermatogenesis in the thin-lipped grey mullet, Liza ramada, out of its spawning season. The results revealed that testes obtained from fish out of their reproductive season have empty seminiferous tubules with germ cells or Sertoli cells markers barely expressed and a low gonadsomatic index (GSI). A significant increase in GSI levels was observed by different hormone treatments. As predicted, hormone treatments showed an obvious stimulation of germ cells proliferation and testicular maturation as indicated by the immunohistochemical expression of germ cells and Sertoli cells markers with the highest values achieved by hCG/AE treatment. We conclude that hormone treatments may be a potential strategy for the induction of spermatogenesis and testes maturation.
