Abstract:
SUMMARYThisstudyevaluatedtheeffectsofpumpkinoil(PKO),anovelfeedadditive,ongrowth,carcass,digestiveenzymes,bloodmetabolites,andcecalbacterialloadinbroilerchickens.250one-wk-oldchickswererandomlyassignedinto5equalgroups.Group1(control)wasfedthebasaldiet(BD).Groups2,3,4,and5werefedthebasaldiet(BD)with0.50,1.00,1.50,and2.00mlofPKO/kgdiet,respectively.AccordingtoGC-MSanalysis,pumpkinoilcontainsAnthracene,Pyrene,Anethole,Estragole,OleicAcid,Eugenol,1-Dodecanamine,N,N-dimethyl-andHexadecanoicacid,etc.ThebroilersfedthePKO-supplementeddiethadbettergrowthandfeedconversionratio(FCR)thanthosefedthecontroldiet,withnoeffectonfeedintake(P>0.05).Thehighestbodyweightgain(P<0.05)wasobtainedwith1and2mlofPKO/kgdietcomparedto0.5and1.5ml/kg.ThebestFCR(P<0.05)wasachievedwith1mlofPKO/kgdietcomparedtoothertreatments.Ileallipase,amylase,andproteaselevelswereincreasedsignificantlywhilethereversewasobservedforplasmaaspartateaminotransferase(AST),alanineaminotransferase(ALT),creatinine,urea,anduricacid(P<0.05)byPKO-supplementeddiets.PKOsupplementationdidnot,however,alterthepercentageofgiblets,internalorgans,dressing,orcarcass(P>0.05).Whencomparedtocontrolbirds,broilers’plasmalevelofhigh-densitylipoprotein(HDL)washigherandthoseoftriglycerides(TG),totalcholesterol(TC),verylow-densitylipoprotein(VLDL),andlow-density lipoprotein (LDL) werelowerateverytestedlevelofPKO(P < 0.05). Similarly,allPKOlev- els increasedLactobacillianddecreasedthecaecalcountsofSalmonella,coliforms,and E. coli (P < 0.05). Totalantioxidantcapacity(TAC) andsuperoxidedismutase(SOD) were significantly (P < 0.05) increasedwhilethemalondialdehyde(MDA) wasdecreasedin broilers fedPKO-supplementeddietvscontrolbirds.PKOenhancedimmuneresponseparam- eters includingtotalprotein,globulin, IgA, IgG, and C3 (P < 0.05) dosedependently. It wasconcludedthataddingPKOinthebroilers’dietpositivelyaffectedgrowth performance, inducedhypolipidemiceffect,enhancedimmunity,andantimicrobialandanti- oxidant activities.
