Abstract:
Abstract Background: Fatigue is the most common and incapacitating side effect in patients with Cancer. Although most cancer patients report that fatigue is a major obstacle to maintaining normal daily activities and quality of life, it is seldom assessed and treated in clinical practice. The aim of the present study was to evaluate cancer- related fatigue according to children with cancer perspectives. Descriptive design was used in the present study. Sample: 125 children diagnosed with cancer. Setting: Oncology Unit at Zagazig University Children Hospital. Five tools were used in this study. The first was a questionnaire interview sheet. The second was the Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory-Short Form, the third was the cancer fatigue scale, the fourth was Fatigue assessment scale; and the fifth was Multidimensional Assessment of fatigue scale. The results: 72% of children reported cancer treatment as the main cause of fatigue. The majority of studied children (93.6%) reported physical fatigue type, moderate fatigue was reported by 71.2% of children, and 93.6% mentioned high score of fatigue interference on daily activities. Conclusion: children who had cancer were oriented about definition, causes, and degree, as well as types of fatigue. Moreover, they were oriented about multidimensional aspect of fatigue including fatigue effect on daily living activities. Recommendations: Based on the results (1) in-service training programs for nurses directed toward all aspects of Cancer- Related Fatigue should be conducted. (2) An assessment and management of cancer-related Fatigue should be enrolled in daily routine care of cancer children. Key words: cancer, Children, and Cancer-Related Fatigue.
