Abstract:
Myocardial infarction is a major heart disease and is considered a significant reason for mortality and morbidity around the world. It occurs when the blood supply to a part of the heart is interrupted, causing death to the heart tissue. The pathogenesis of myocardial infarction (MI) is complex and usually an array of biomarkers is needed for its diagnosis and prognosis. Oxidative stress is crucial in the pathogenesis of MI. The aim of the present study was to investigate the oxidative and antioxidative markers in cardiovascular diseases CVD patients and a control population. The study population contained 75 subjects divided into three groups, 25 patients with coronary insufficiently diseases with no past history with MI and 25 patients were diagnosed with MI comparable to the other healthy control group regarding their age and sex. Malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was assayed with colorimetric method. Our results showed a significant increase in MDA levels in the two groups of patients meanwhile, there was a notable decreased in serum TAC as compared to the healthy subjects (P<0.05). Both the markers MDA and TAC were significantly altered in MI so they could be used to evaluate oxidative stress and antioxidants status in these patients. This study mainly proved roles of the antioxidant status which seems to be one of the best markers in distinguishing and predicting the future cardiac events of people with suspected cardiovascular diseases. The corresponding best cutoff predictive values could be useful in early diagnosis of coronary insufficiency and myocardial infarction.
