Relationship between Bullying Behaviors Experienced by Student Nurses and their Self- Esteem

Abstract:
Background: Bullying behaviors any situations where students repeatedly and eventually feel subjected to negative treatment, have difficulty in defending themselves and lowering their self-esteem which is the level of approval, acceptance and self-worth in relation to self. The aim of the study: was to identify the relationship between bullying behaviors experienced by student nurses and their self- esteem. Subjects & Methods: Research design: A descriptive correlational design was used. Setting: The Faculty of Nursing, Zagazig University. Subjects: Stratified random sample of 382 nursing students. Tools of data collection: Two tools were used: 1) Bullying student nurse questionnaire, and 2) Self-esteem scale. Results: Results revealed that the most types of bullying behaviors experienced by student nurses were the negative remarks about becoming a nurse, attempts were made to demoralize them, teasing, and placing them under undue pressure to produce work, and the highest percentage of student nurses experienced bullying behaviors by staff nurses and physician respectively. Additionally, more than half of student nurses experienced that bullying behaviors had average organizational and physical effects on them respectively. Moreover, 34.2%, 31.1% & 25.6% of student nurses always turn back to religion to overcome the behavior, venting with others and positive reframing to cope with bullying behaviors, respectively, as well as the highest percentage of student nurses had a moderate level of self-esteem. Conclusion: There was no statistically significant correlation between total scores of bullying behaviors experienced by student nurses and their self-esteem. Recommendations: Nursing students, faculty members and faculty management need to conduct conferences for discussion and identifying bullying behaviors to seek effective solutions, prevention and intervention.
