Abstract:
This thesis attemts to prove that Milton exploits both the classical and christian epic conventions and heroic outlook in composing Paradise Lost so as to alter the traditions. Milton changes the tradition when he diversifies the epic conventions among his characters. The epic conventions are not devoted to one single charac-ter which is the hero of the epic but rather to satan, the son, the rebel and the faithful angels, and Adam and Eve The epic conventions connected with satan are: a scene of war, a voyage, a description of process, and a tempter. The epic conventions linked to adam and eve are: a dream, an omen, a prophecy, a revelation of past events, a journey to an unknown land, a temptation scent of a heavenly messenger. Moreover, Milton changes the tion as he includes the heroic outlook conceived by homer, vergil, Dante and tasso in his epic.In order to present this hypothesis, the thesis can be classified into the following chapter (One) discusses the main features of the epic poem and the differences between the oral and the literary epic;Chapter (Two) presents the controversy [both the satanists’ and anti-satanists’ discussions] over satan as a heroic figure;Chapter (Three) discusses the epic conventions in paradise Lost from book one to book eight which are: invocations, a summary of the main subject at the opebing lines of the epic, a council, a voyager, an intercessor, feasts, songs, games a dream, a prayer a descent of a heavenly messenger, a description of process, a reve-lation of past events, a scene of war,Chapter (our) discusses the epic conventions from book nine to book tewelve which are: invocations, a temptation scene, a suppliant image and conclusion.
