Abstract:
Interest in how speakers of english are able to distinguish between what constitutes a text and what doesn’t has been the main concern of a number of linguists for over a decade.(cf. for example, van Dijk 1972, 1977, Gatwinski 1976, de Beaugrande 1980, de beaugrande & Dressler 1981, Hallilay & Hasan 1976).Though different other studies have been attempted on the issue, Halliday & Hasan’s remains ” by for the most comprehensive treatment of the subject and has become the standard text in the area”.All the Arabic examples cited are immediately followed by an interlinear literal translation which attempts to provide english equivalences according to the grammatical sequence of the Arbic text.
