Abstract:
Arthur Miller (1915- ) is one of the few major playweights in contemporary american theatre. through his contribution to playwriting abd dramatic critcism, he helped in extending the scope and significance of the american .Miller attempted to write tragedy inthe modern sense. early in his career, he tried to establish a theoretical basis for his work. his erliest essay on drama, ” Tragedy and the common man” is the besis of this concept.these plays are: all my sons (1947), Death of a Sales-man (1949), the crucible(1953 ), a view from the bridge ( Revised edition ,1957), After the fall (1964), Incident at vichy(1964).The first chapter deals with Miller’s concept of tragedy and tragic hero as seen in his critical writings and in the light of the classical tradition of tragedy.the second chapter deals with the first phase in Miller’s career; it includes two plays.In this phase, Miller attempts a modern social tragedy, especially in Death of salesman.
