Abstract:
This study falls into three chapters and a conclusion.Chapter 1, ( The lost Generation), discusses the span between the two world wars as an eventful period and its effect on the literary career of Hemingway and Steinbeck.Chapter II, (The End of Innocence), discusses Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms and steinbeck’s The Moon is Down in view of their tragic themes. It analyzes the tragic ends of the two war novels with all their philosophical and spiritual implication as revealed in the character’s course of action.Chapter III, (Dualism), is concerned mainly with dualism as a major theme in The old man and The Sea and The pearl. It discusses how both writers employ the different symbols which finally lead to dualism. The Conclusion stresses the tragic concept in the works of the two writers by demonstrating the areas of resemblance and difference. It focuses on how both writers try to set their characters in social and moral contexts where the code of behaviour is bound to deviate from any other traditional code.
