Abstract:
The first chapter of this study displays the theoretical technical devices with special reference to the Augsten concept of satire as a literary device wherein laughter plays a great pat, with the purpose of correcting the morals of the audience. The second chapter discusses much more about creative process of satiric performance with its con-trolled artistry, its general tone, aims and attitudes, its modes and means; and the actual nature of the re-sponse of those who are offended by the creative satiric work. this chapter also explains why people are often frightened of the satirist. The third chapter reveals swift’s satiric tech-nique in A Tale of A Tub. This chapter shows that swift’s creative satirical work is not simply a piece of entwetainment. that is its more superficial side; it is merely a means for capturing the interest. So he uses various technical devices for attack and he even adopts, in a satirical manner, an attitude different from his narrator; a modern pretended author who attacks what he himself upholds.Chapter four deals with the satiric scope of Smollett in more Roderick Random. It shows that Smollett is more complex an artist that critics have suggested. And though he is so venturesome that he may direct his satire at society, yet he is always willing to write coolly, with an apparent absence of anger, for the sake of satire.
