Abstract:
In this study, chemical composition and some physico-chemical parameters of the Physalis peruviana fruit juice were investigated. The antioxidative potential of fruit juice was assessed by means of bleaching of the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. The yield of juice is extremely high and the juice is rich sources of sugars as well as water- and fat-soluble bioactives.Goldenberry pomace (seeds and skins) represent the waste obtained during juice processing (ca. 27.4% of fruit weight). In the present contribution, the potential of goldenberry pomace for use as a substrate for the production of edible oil was evaluated. Toward developing goldenberry as a commercial crop, the results provide important data for the industrial application of goldenberry. The study also covers the chemical composition and some fractional properties of pomace oil including fatty acid profile and other fat-soluble bioactives (i.e. sterols, tocopherols and phenolics). Pomace oil was tested for its radical scavenging activity toward the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and their oxidative stability. An experiment was carried out by using 30 albino rats divided into six groups after an adaptation period (7 days). The negative control (5 rats) was fed on basal diet, while positive control was fed on a hypercholesterolemic diet. The four treated groups were fed on hypercholesterolemic diets supplemented with 5%, 15% fruit juice and 10% and 30% fruit pomace, respectively. The duration period of the experiment was 8 weeks, at the end of which the body weight gain, liver, kidneys functions and lipid pattern were determined. It was found that the addition of fruit juice gave the highest significant decrease in total lipid, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Other plants also significantly decrease all these parameters but at lower different degrees. HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG/LDL-cholesterol ratio. Most organs functions were improved and approached nearly the negative control levels of SGOT, SGPT, SGOT/SGPT ratio, serum albumin, serum total protein, serum globulin, serum total bilirubin, albumin/globulin ratio, serum uric acid and blood urea.
