Abstract:
Fungi start to invade and colonize seeds of caraway and cumin before harvest causing reduction in the yield and the quality of seeds during storage.Infected seeds may also act as source of different pathogens, which provide inoculum that may infect the new plants when seeds are planted. Pathogens may also be disseminated over long distances and introduced into new areas via infected seeds (Sinclair, 1982).Thus, this investigation was conducted to cover the following aspects:a) Detecting and identifying the seed-borne fungi associated with caraway and cumin seeds.b) Detection the location of seed-borne fungi on and/or in seed parts.c) Pathogenicity tests, transmission of seed-borne fungi and host range studies.d) Factors affecting storage and possibility of aflatoxin production.e) Control studies including plant essential oils, biological agents, and fungicides.
