Abstract:
The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of some safety control methods of stored product insects. The tested control methods were: some plant powders and some inert materials powders as grain protectants. Low and high temperatures, low air pressure and atmospheric gases such as CO2 and N2 singly or in mixture with the oxygen as modified atmosphere were also used. These safe methods of control were evaluated against the different stages of four known species of stored product insects. These insects species were:Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), Tribolium castaneum, (Herbst),Rhizopertha dominica (F.) and Sitotroga cerealella. (Oliveir).Germination of seeds, which were exposed to these methods of control, was also tested. The results showed that some of the used protectantswere effective against the tested insects. Low temperature (-4oC and-13oC.) were very promising for the householders. Atmospheric gasesproved to be very effective against the used insects. Germination ofseeds was affected by the high temperature.
