Abstract:
Signalized roundabouts are used to manage conflicting traffic movements and improve traffic operation under high traffic demand. However, they may still experience congestion, long queues, and high vehicle delay, especially when traffic demand is high or unevenly distributed among approaches. Their operation is more complex than conventional signalized intersections because vehicle movements are affected by signal timing, circulating flow interaction, weaving movements, entry and exit behavior, roundabout geometry, and driver behavior. Therefore, accurate delay evaluation is necessary to identify operational problems and select suitable improvement alternatives. The main problem addressed in this study is the existence of congestion and high delay at selected signalized roundabouts in 10th of Ramadan City, in addition to the uncertainty about whether the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) signalized intersection delay procedure can accurately represent their actual delay conditions. Since the HCM procedure is mainly developed for conventional signalized intersections, applying it directly to signalized roundabouts may produce differences between estimated and observed delay values.
