Abstract:
A thorough understanding of subsurface conditions and geological heterogeneity is essential for the safe and economical design of large infrastructure projects, particularly in complex formations such as conglomerate deposits. Variations in lithology, cementation, and weathering can significantly influence the mechanical behavior of foundation bedrock, introducing uncertainty in strength and stiffness parameters. While conventional boreholes and in situ geotechnical tests provide valuable vertical (1D) data, they are often insufficient to capture lateral variability and complex subsurface features. This study presents an integrated site characterization approach combining Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW), Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), and point geotechnical investigations at the Al Maktoum Airport site in Dubai. The objective was to delineate bedrock topography, detect weak or heterogeneous zones within the conglomerate bedrock, and evaluate deep soil characteristics relevant to foundation design and seismic assessment. The findings indicate a generally low risk associated with 2D site characterization to a depth of 30 m. However, localized anomalies were identified through both ERT and seismic profiles, characterized by low shear-wave velocities and very low resistivity values, suggesting weaker heterogeneous zones. According to IBC (2009), the site is classified as Class C, with V30 values ranging between 360 and 760 m/s.
