The phenomenon of dropout is characterized by its multiple dimensions and effects. This study addresses educational dropout in the Gharbia Governorate by monitoring the quantitative variation of the phenomenon and its spatial variation at the level of administrative units in the governorate according to place of residence and gender, in addition to studying dropout patterns according to the educational stage, and revealing the causes of educational dropout, as well as the relationship of educational dropout to the issue of illiteracy. The study revealed an increase in school dropout rates across the governorate, with a higher dropout rate in rural areas compared to urban areas. Dropouts from the preparatory stage constituted the largest share of all school dropouts in the governorate. While multiple factors contribute to school dropout, personal, familial, and economic reasons were found to be the most significant. The study also explored the relationship between school dropout and illiteracy, highlighting the latter as a contributing factor to illiteracy.
