Background: One important brain region involved in spatial function and episodic memory is the hippocampus. Although energy drinks negatively affect several organs, they are ingested to make up for sleep deprivation. Energy drinks with caffeine have also been connected to detrimental effects on cognition, including headaches, anxiety, tension, excessive activity, and exhaustion, according to several writers. Additional negative effects, such as sadness, insomnia, and irritability, were reported by others. A naturally occurring polyphenol, naringin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. One of the most important polyphenols which may be isolated from citrus fruits is naringin (NAR). Naringin has garnered interest because it has a strong effect against inflammation, apoptosis, ulceration, osteoporosis, and cancer. Treatment with Naringin was demonstrated in earlier research to lessen oxidative damage and histological alterations brought on by ischemia reperfusion in the striatum, hippocampal region, and brain.
Material and methods: Twenty adult male albino rats, weighing
210-250 gm were distributed in an equal manner into; Group I: given 1 ml normal saline, Group II: received 100mg/kg B.w of naringin, Group III: given 3.1ml/kg B.W of Red Bull, Group IV: 100mg/kg B.w of naringin + 3.1ml/kg B.W of Red Bull by intra-gastric intubation. When the experiment is finished, rats were subjected to behavioral tests then sacrificed. Hippocampi were dissected then processed for histological and biochemical studies.
Results: Red Bull caused impaired behavioral tests of rats, disturbed oxidative enzymes and histological alternation. Co-administration of Naringin and Red Bull protected most of altered changes.
Conclusion: Naringin supplementation with Red Bull nearly completely protected the hippocampal structure and functions to their pre-damaged state.
