Abstract:
Mpox (formerly Monkeypox) is a viral zoonotic infectious disease caused by an Orthopoxvirus first detected in humans in 1970, and historically confined to West and Central Africa. By August 2024, the World Health Organization declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). This PHEIC determination is the second in two years relating to mpox. The emergence of a new clade of mpox (clade Ib), its rapid spread in the Democratic Republic of the Congo mainly through sexual networks, and the reporting of cases in several neighboring countries are factors that raised concerns about the possibility of an upcoming global outbreak (World Health Organization, 2024). In parallel, Africa CDC declares mpox a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS)
