Abstract:
The production and cost of hydrogen using solar resources offer significant opportunities for developing countries in terms of sustainable development and energy diversification. Where the grid infrastructure is limited and the electricity access remains scarce, Djibouti, Addis Abeba, Asmara, and Mogadishu are exploring eco-friendly renewable energy sources as alternatives to improve electricity access. In this paper, the economic viability investigation of the hydrogen using 2000 kW PV plant and alkaline electrolyzer, is quantified for four selected sites. The fair analysis highlights that Asmara receives the highest solar radiation at 6.49 kWh/m2.day −1. In contrast, Addis Abeba receives the lowest solar radiation at 5.56 kWh/m2. day-1, followed closely by Djibouti and Mogadishu at 5.88 kWh/m2.day −1 and 5.90 kWh/m2.day −1, respectively. In comparison with the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), the novel findings of the paper show that Addis Abeba has the lowest LCOH at 6.69 $/kg in contrast to Mogadishu, which has the highest LCOH at 22.63 $/kg. Asmara and Djibouti LCOH values are 7.17 $/kg and 8.69 $/kg, respectively. Asmara demonstrates environmental benefits through sustainable development goals (SDGs) with the annual CO 2 emission reductions and carbon credits of 1033 tons and 41329 $, respectively. The results of sensitivity analysis highlight that the combination of electrolyzer and electricity costs plays a major role in LCOH reduction.
