Abstract:
Throughout history, visual arts have passed through multiple intellectual and philosophical stages that directly shaped their features and diverse directions. Art has consistently served as a mirror reflecting the transformations witnessed by society on philosophical, scientific, and technological levels. With the evolution of philosophical thought and the multiplicity of human perspectives, artistic practice expanded significantly in the twentieth century and beyond. Modern intellectual currents introduced new concepts that profoundly influenced contemporary modes of artistic expression. In light of openness to modern and postmodern concepts, art studies are no longer confined to aesthetics alone; rather, they encompass human, cultural, social, and scientific dimensions, which have imparted deeper and broader meanings to artistic experiences. Modern sciences, particularly technology, have contributed to reshaping the creative framework of visual arts, giving rise to new directions associated with contemporary philosophies. Some drew inspiration from psychology, industrial thought, or communication technologies. These shifts resulted in innovative modes of expression that transcended traditional approaches and sought to articulate artistic forms reflective of profound societal transformations. Within this context, abstraction emerged as one of the most influential movements, effecting a radical change in the structure of the artwork. It redefined the role of form and visual elements, replacing realistic details with linear, chromatic, and structural relationships that convey aesthetic values rooted in the artist’s inner vision and subjective perception. In this sense, abstraction is regarded as a fundamental means of expressing the essential content of form, free from superficial imitation of reality. It is based on free and balanced compositions that grant the artwork a renewed presence through chromatic rhythm and structural harmony. This transformation expanded the scope of innovation, establishing abstraction as a contemporary tool for expressing the depth of human experience and one of the most influential directions shaping modern and contemporary visual arts. Amid these transformations, the field of hand weaving witnessed a qualitative shift in its concepts and methods. No longer restricted to traditional materials or familiar techniques, weaving opened up to other artistic disciplines such as sculpture, printmaking, and painting. It began to incorporate unconventional materials like paper, plastic, and watercolors. This interdisciplinary approach led to the emergence of contemporary textile works characterized by experimentation and innovation, transcending traditional frameworks to present fresh visual perspectives. Such interaction among the arts granted greater freedom of textile expression and contributed to constructing artworks from an integrated philosophical and aesthetic standpoint. In light of the foregoing, abstraction represents a fertile field for exploring aesthetic and formal values in hand weaving, as it provides new opportunities for employing form and material in unconventional ways aligned with the philosophical essence of abstraction. This perspective offers possibilities for generating innovative formal solutions and producing textile works distinguished by aesthetic and expressive depth. Abstraction thus becomes an effective approach to developing the structure of textile wall hangings and reinterpreting them in a contemporary framework
