Abstract:
This study pioneers the evaluation of Ethyl Cellulose (EC), a bio-based polymer, as an environmentally conscious alternative for stabilizing loose sandy soils. The core objective was to assess its potential to replace conventional stabilizers under fluctuating moisture conditions. EC was incorporated into clean sand at a low dosage (typically 1% to 2% by weight). Experimental findings demonstrated that the EC-treated samples achieved significant enhancements in mechanical properties, registering unconfined compressive strength values far superior to those obtained using traditional biopolymers like Xanthan or Guar gum at similar concentrations. Critically, the study confirms the water-resistant nature of the resulting composite; the solidified sand maintained its strength and exhibited exceptional resistance to collapse even after extended water immersion. This highlights EC as a potent, sustainable, and durable agent for soil solidification applications in geotechnical engineering.
