Abstract:
The current coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated the critical importance of digital technology. While countries, companies, and financial and business institutions considered digital capabilities the primary driver of competitiveness, they became the primary solution to the global economic and institutional standstill caused by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. This pandemic brought the world and the economies of countries to a standstill, prompting countries, governments, companies, and institutions to turn to digital technology to drive the global economy, albeit weakly. However, it has been a solution for many countries with digital technology, as it serves as the "link" that unites the five pillars of the digital economy: digital infrastructure, digital platforms, digital entrepreneurship, digital financial services, and digital skills. In the current digital age, digital capabilities are a prerequisite for the transformation of our countries and economies. The coronavirus pandemic has had an immediate and far-reaching impact on various types of businesses, including digital entrepreneurship, especially after the closure of businesses, schools, sports arenas, and entertainment centers (Ozili & Arun 2020). It is expected that each country's GDP growth will suffer a hit of 3-5%. GDP could fall by up to 10%. On average, each additional month of crises costs 2-2.5% of global GDP. Based on previous crises, younger and less educated workers are, unfortunately, more likely to lose their jobs (Fernandes, 2020). In light of all this, people have turned to the digital world to fill this gap, creating numerous opportunities for digital entrepreneurs, but accompanied by numerous challenges. Among the challenges faced by digital economy and entrepreneurship institutions are the intense pressures imposed on them overnight in terms of increased demand for digital services, the reshaping of supply and demand, the necessary collaboration with workforce institutions to support remote work, and a host of other issues that require a wide range of high flexibility and immediate response (Deloitte, 2020). Given the complexity of the pandemic, there are many reasons to believe that the recovery phase from the COVID-19 pandemic will require unprecedented levels of coordination, communication, and policy changes, and will take a relatively long time across the world (Sahut et al., 2019). Economic digitalization is already a central issue across many disciplines, and we have witnessed an increase in the use of digital communication tools during the COVID-19 crisis (Rigotti et al., 2020). The crisis has created an urgent need to shift national and institutional innovation strategies toward accelerating the development and use of advanced technologies such as 3D printing, digital solutions, digital currencies, and artificial intelligence in development and economic sectors such as health, education, and manufacturing. It has led to the growth of some sectors and industries and the contraction of others, which has impacted the economies of countries that rely on the sale of non-digital services such as tourism (Ungerer et al., 2020). All these developments have placed the global economy in a position to transition to a digital economy, one that relies extensively and heavily on information technology to ensure containment of the COVID-19 crisis and ensure the readiness of countries and governments to confront disasters and crises without impacting economic growth.
