Abstract:
Microtunneling techniques have been growing rapidly because they provide for constructing utility pipelines under existing structures such as railways, roads, and canals. Minimal disruption of service, social costs, and environmental impacts are added advantages of microtunneling. This paper presents a case history of pipe jacking a wastewater line in Egypt. The line was constructed using a slurry system and consisted of four drives of different diameters. The adopted pipe jacking method is documented in the paper. The main challenges that faced the pipe jacking works are also highlighted. Field records of actual pipe jacking penetration rates and delays are presented. These records are discussed with emphasis being on the productivity phases of pipe jacking. Significant observations that help in effective planning of future pipe jacking works are also presented.
