ABSTRACTThedevelopmentofantibiotic-resistantmicroorganismspromptedtheinvestigationofpossibleanti-bioticsubstitutes.Asaresult,thepurposeofthecurrentstudyistoassesstheeffectofdietarySpirulinaplatensisextractasanantibioticalternativeonJapanesequail(Coturnixjaponica)growth,antioxidantstatus,bloodparameters,andcecalmicroorganisms.Therewasatotalof150Japanesequailsusedinthisstudy,dividedequallyamong5experimentalgroups(10birdspergroupwith3rep-licates):group1(G1)receivedabasaldietwithoutanyS.platensisextract,group2(G2)receivedabasaldietsupple-mentedwith1mLS.platensisextract/kg,group3(G3)receivedabasaldietsupplementedwith2mLS.platensisextract/kg,group4(G4)receivedabasaldietsupplementedwith3mLS.platensisextract/kg,andgroup5(G5)receivedabasaldietsupplementedwith4mLS.platensisextract/kgfromd7untild35.Theresultsshowedthatcom-paredtothecontrolbirdsinG1,Japanesequailsupple-mentedwith4mLofS.platensisextract/kgofdiet(G5)hadsignificantlybetterlivebodyweight,bodyweightgain,feedintake,feedconversionratio,digestiveenzymes,bloodparameters,liverandkidneyfunctions,lipidprofile,antioxidantprofile,immunologicalparameters,andcecalmicroorganism’scount.Therewerenosignificantchangesinthepercentageofcarcasses,liver,andtotalgibletsamongallthe5groups.OnlygizzardpercentageshowedasignificantincreaseinG2comparedtobirdsinG1.Inaddition,intesti-nalpHshowedasignificantdropinG2andG5comparedtobirdsinG1.Aftercookingthequailmeat,thejuicinessandtendernessincreasedasS.platensisextractlevelsincreased,whereasaromaandtastedeclinedslightlyasS.platensisextractlevelsincreased.Furthermore,whenahighconcen-trationofS.platensisextractwasused,thelightnessofthemeatreducedwhileitsrednessandyellownessincreased.ThediskdiffusionassayshowedthatS.platensisextracthadsignificantantibacterialactivityagainstStaphylococcusaureus,Listeriamonocytogenes,Campylobacterjejuni,andSalmonellatyphi,withinhibitionzonesrangingfrom16to42mm.ThisactivitymaybeattributabletothevolatilechemicalsinS.platensisextract,ofwhichGeosminand2-methylisoborneolaretheprimarycomponents.InthedietofJapanesequails,itispossibletodrawtheconclusionthattheextractofS.platensiscanbeutilizedasafeedadditiveandasanalternativetoantibiotics.
