Dietary supplementation with a mixture of Dunaliella salina and Spirulina enhances broiler performance by improving growth, immunity, digestive enzymes and gut microbiota.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTTheaimofthisstudyistoevaluatetheeffectofDunaliellasalinaandSpirulina(D+S)mix-tureonperformance,carcassyield,kidneyandlivermarkers,lipidprofile,andimmuneresponsesoffatten-ingchicks.Twohundredbroilerchicksat7daysoldweredistributedinto5experimentalgroups,5repli-cateseachwith8chickseach.Group1wasfedononlybasaldiet;group2wasfedwithbasaldietand0.50g/kg(D+S);group3wasfedwithbasaldietand1.00g/kg(D+S);group4wasfedwithbasaldietand1.50g/kg(D+S);andgroup5wasfedwithbasaldietsupplementedwith2.00g/kg(D+S).Theadditivemixture(D+S)consistedof(1D.salina:1Spirulina).Theexperimentlastedfor6wk.Theresultsdemon-stratedsignificantlyimprovedbetterlivebodyweight,bodyweightgain,andfeedconversionratio(P<0.01)forgroupsthatreceived(D+S)atlevelsof1.0and1.5g/kgdietcomparedtoothergroupsat6wkofage.Therewasnosignificantinfluenceofdifferentlevelsofdietaryfeedadditivesonfeedintakeorcarcasstraits.Thelipidprofilewasimprovedthroughareductionoftotalcholesterolandlow-densitylipoprotein(LDL)valuesandincreasinghigh-densitylipoprotein(HDL)values,aswellastheimmuneresponse,whichwasimprovedthroughincreasingvaluesofcomplement3,immunoglobulinM(IgM),andimmunoglobulinG(IgG)inthebirdstreatedwith(D+S)comparedtothecontrolgroup.Theinclusionofalllevelsof(D+S)/kgdecreasedtriglyceride,whiletotalprotein,albumen,andglobulinvalues(P<0.05orP<0.01)werehighercomparedtoothergroups.Theinclusionofthedifferentlevelsof(D+S)/kgimprovedliverfunction,whereasaspartateaminotransferase(AST)andala-nineaminotransferase(ALT)valueswerelowerthaninothergroups(P<0.001).Thelowestvaluesofcreati-nine,urea,anduricacidwerenotedinbirdsfedadietsupplementedwith1.50g(D+S)/kg.Antioxidantlev-elswereimprovedthroughincreasingvaluesofcatalase(CAT)andreducedglutathione(GSH)enzymesinthetreatedbirdswith(D+S)comparedwiththecon-trolchicks.Furthermore,digestiveenzymesandmicro-bialcontentwereimprovedinbroilerchecksfedondietsupplementedwith(D+S)comparedtothecontrolgroup.Inconclusion,supplementingbroilerchickswithadietaryD.salinaandSpirulinacombinationincreasedtheirproductiveperformance,immunity,kid-neyandliverfunction,lipidprofile,anddigestiveenzymes.
