Abstract:
Folded foundations have been used as an alternative to the conventional flat shallow foundations. The traditional bearing wall system consumes large amounts of steel in its foundations. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is introducing an alternative foundation shape that reduces the cost of foundations by reducing the amount of reinforcing steel through choosing the most effective folded strip footing shape. A well known concept in reinforced concrete is its ability to sustain high compressive stresses, while the steel is only needed in tension zones. The finite element analysis software ADINA is used in modeling and analysis of rectangular and folded strip footing subjected to moment, with emphasis on the effect of changing the footing shape on the stresses in the footing concrete body and the underlying clay soil. Eccentric values ranging from 0.10 up to 0.50m, while footing reinforcement will be minimum ( 0.15% of the total concrete area. Research results showed the effectiveness of the eccentric folded strip footing in reducing the amount of needed steel reinforcements, along with slightly reducing the soil stresses and settlements underneath it. The distribution of vertical and horizontal stresses in the clay soil domain is also presented for both eccentric rectangular and folded strip footings. Stresses within the concrete footing are also presented showing the compression and tension zones.
