Abstract:
Background: Climate change is one of the most consequential threats facing humanity today. It is not only endangers the sustainability and health of the planet, but also exacerbates social, economic, environmental, and geographic inequality across generations. Especially current generation as they will reach adulthood in the next 10-20 years. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of youth empowerment program about climate change. Subjects and methods: A quasi-experimental research design with pre-post test was used, where 124 governmental secondary school students were enrolled using a cluster random sampling technique. Two tools were used for data collection: (1) An Interview questionnaire composed of personal and environmental data, (2) Climate Change Survey Questionnaire consisted of three parts (knowledge regarding climate change, attitude towards climate change, and climate change relevant behavior). Results: Studied youth were initially to some extent knowledgeable (66.9%) about climate change, held positive attitude (52.4%) and behaved (24.2%) adequately toward it. Conclusion: Nursing intervention proved to be an adequate tool in empowering youth regarding climate change in terms of knowledge, attitude, and behavior. Recommendations: Health education about climate change ought to be conducted to school students. Moreover, schools must involve students in environmental protection endeavors as forestation, planting of plants, reducing use of firewood, considerate use of non-renewable resource of energy, waste management, etc.
