Abstract:
The study examined the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war crisis on food security in Egypt. Food security is a very important issue because of its negative consequences on health, economic and social development. According to statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), about 2.4 billion people in 2021 around the world suffer from food insecurity. This represents nearly a third of the world's population. The Russian-Ukrainian crisis will have a negative impact on the Egyptian economy, as it negatively affected commodity prices in many sectors, including food and energy. Egypt's average imports from Russia and Ukraine amounted to about 5.8 billion US dollars, which represents about 8.1% of total imports during the study period (2016-2021). The world has witnessed many inflationary waves over the past years, and those inflationary waves are still continuing. This is due to many global crises, including the Corona virus crisis, which began at the end of 2019 and its consequences and repercussions continue to have a major impact on many of the economies of countries around the world, then the Russia-Ukraine war in February of 2022, then a succession of crises and conflicts, including the current ongoing Gaza war, Which affects the supply of global food chains. The study reached a set of results, the most important of which are: Wars and conflicts during the year 2021 led to an increase in the prices of commodities and food products, especially grains, including raw wheat. There is also a positive linear correlation between global inflation rates and local inflation rates in the Arab Republic of Egypt. In addition to the presence of a large demand gap in the Egyptian market for raw wheat, filling this gap requires providing financing exceeding about 10 billion dollars annually.
