Abstract:
This paper examines August Strindberg’s innovative departure from conventional narrative resolution techniques, resulting in a pioneering dramatic form marked by the unpredictable metamorphosis of characters and scenes, akin to dreamlike fluidity. Strindberg’s skillful employment of the deus ex machina device strengthens this surreal aesthetic, challenging traditional narrative structures that prioritize linearity and neat conclusions. In Strindberg’s Dream Play, the deus ex machina is reimagined as a sophisticated narrative device that delves into existential and philosophical inquiries. Indra’s daughter’s descent to Earth serves as a vehicle to explore human suffering and spiritual enlightenment, ultimately revealing that her mission is not to eliminate suffering but to provide a pathway to transcendence and liberation from the inherent struggles of human existence. This reinterpretation subverts traditional narrative resolutions, emphasizing a more profound thematic exploration rather than a mere plot device.
