Abstract: |
The current study aimed to investigate the contribution of parenting styles With a sample of students with visual impairment to predicting cognitive distortions. The study used a descriptive correlational comparative methodology, with a sample of 108 university students (42 males and 66 females) aged 18 to 33 years With an average age of 24.2 and a standard deviation of 2.6, the researchers applied their questionnaire on parenting styles and cognitive impairments to visually impaired students in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels from universities in Zagazig, Damietta, South Valley, and Aswan. Results revealed a negative relationship between democratic parenting style, negative selection, binary thinking, and no relationship with negative generalization, binary thinking, comparison with others, and catastrophic thinking. Additionally, a negative relationship was found between acceptance and independence styles and comparison with others, negative selection, and catastrophic thinking. On the other hand, neglectful parenting style showed a positive relationship with negative generalization, comparison with others, negative selection, and catastrophic thinking. Excessive protection and harsh parenting styles were positively correlated with all cognitive distortions. No significant differences were found in parenting styles and cognitive distortions based on demographic variables (gender, age, type of disability, and family disability). Finally, the results indicated the predictive contribution of independence, neglect, excessive protection, and harshness in negative generalization and negative selection, while democratic and acceptance styles did not contribute to negative generalization prediction. Additionally, excessive protection and harshness contributed to binary thinking prediction, while other styles did not. All parenting styles contributed to predicting comparison with others, while only neglectful style contributed to negative selection prediction.
