Abstract:
This experiment was conducted for two consecutive summer seasons of 2014 and 2015 to study the effect of different intercropping systems (roselle : cowpea at different row ratios; 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 2:3 in comparison with sole crop of each specie), different biofertilization types (uninoculated as control, Azotobacter, Rhizobium and a mixture of the two types of the biofertilizers) and their combinations on growth, yield components and some chemical constituents of roselle and cowpea. A split plot experiment in a randomized complete blocks design was used in this search with three replications. Results indicated that in most cases the highest values of all recorded parameters (number of branches /plant, total dry weight, number of roselle fruits/plant, dry sepals yield/plant and anthocyanin content) were recorded when roselle plants were intercropped in the system of 1:3 (roselle: cowpea) and fertilized with the mixture of the two types of biofertilization. On a large scale area (feddan), the highest yield of dry sepals per feddan was produced when sole cropping of roselle was fertilized with the same type of the biofertilization. In most cases, the highest number of branches /plant, total dry weight, number of pods/plant, seed yield/plant and leaf green color degree (as SPAD unit) of cowpea were attained when the mixture type (Azotobacter + Rhizobium) was applied with 2:3 or 1:2 systems. On the other side, the highest seed yield/feddan was recorded when sole crop of cowpea was fertilized with the mixture of both types of the biofertilizers.
