Abstract:
The molluscicides at present still fall short of its ideal. Therefore, a series of laboratory and field experiments were designed to study the control measures which can be used effectively to diminish population density and consequently damage caused by certain land snail species Monacha cartusiana Müller and Theba pisana Müller. On the other site, the target is not only investigation for new pesticides but also for examining the factors that might make more safer and more specific molluscicides. So, when applied Neomyl (8 %) and Clove powder buds (40 %) to control M. cartusiana and T. pisana under laboratory and field conditions as soon as, the toxicity effect of application on the tested land snail's digestive glands were investigated. The obtained result cleared that, the mortality percentages increase by increasing concentrations and exposure period since, the mortality percentages (%) recorded 100 % for (2, 4 and 8 %) of neomyl, while it is recorded (36.3 %) and (40%) mortality percentages after 28 days of treatment with clove for M. cartusiana and T. pisana, respectively. The initial effect of the examined compounds recorded (62.89 %) and (18.83 %) reduction percentages when applied neomyl and clove, respectively. On the other hand, the residual effect with neomyl gave high reduction percentages of (83.43 %) followed by clove which gave (28.88 %) reductions. Generally, it could be concluded that neomyl has the most toxic effect against M. cartusiana under field conditions. Since the histological degeneration in the case of neomyl (8 %) was abundant and the digestive cells cytoplasm was altered. Numerous excretory vacuoles were found in the excretory cells. Calcium cells became granulated, the cytoplasm vacuoles dominated, and bizarre nuclei ranged from pyknosis to severe karyorrhexis and complete karyolysis. The result also revealed that the toxicity effects of the concentration 40 % of powdered clove buds for 48 hr. was approximately the same on both treated land snail species.
