Abstract:
This study was carried out to assess Echinacea purpurea (EP) effect on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood biochemical and antioxidant parameters of Ossimi lambs. Ossimi lambs (n = 40) were assigned to a randomized block design of four randomly equal groups (10 each). Group1 (D1) was the control diet without EP. The other groups were supplemented with EP by 4, 8 and 12 g/head/day (D2), (D3) and (D4), respectively. Supplementation EP with levels 4, 8 and 12 g/head/day improved the body weight by 11.82%, 13.80% and 12.26%, respectively, compared with the control group. EP supplementation at level (8 g/head/day) improved (P < 0.01) weight gain and growth rate ( 36.99% and 37.48%, respectively). Cholesterol, triglycerides and Aspartate transaminase were decreased when different levels of EP were supplemented to lambs diets. Moreover, the total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase and glutathione were significantly (P < 0.01) higher in D2 (11.91%, 13.72% and 6.92%, respectively) than the control group. In conclusion, EP supplementation enhanced physiological status, blood metabolites and improved the antioxidant indices of growing lambs. Therefore, it may be used as a growth promoter for growing lambs.
