Optimal selection of battery recycling plant location: strategies, challenges, perspectives, and sustainability

Abstract:
Legislative policies in environmental protection tended to confront and address ecological issues through comprehensive and integrated legislation. Recycling is essential for treating waste batteries, considering sustainable economic, environmental, and social standards. Therefore, this study investigates a battery recycling plant location (BRPL) problem. However, determining the sustainable BRPL is a complex task that requires consideration of many conflicting criteria and their qualitative and quantitative factors. Accordingly, a general index system of sustainability criteria has been introduced, including four basic criteria, namely economic, technical, environmental, and socio-political criteria, as well as 22 sub-criteria. To deal with these multiple criteria and their sub-criteria, a multi-criteria decision-making tool is introduced. Initially, the entropy method was used to determine the relative importance of the main sustainability criteria and their sub-criteria. Afterward, the simple multi-attribute rating technique was applied to rank seven selected BRPLs according to their sustainability. Finally, comparative and sensitivity analyses were conducted to check the proposed model's consistency, robustness, and stability. The findings show that the environmental criterion is the most important criterion, with a weight of 0.349. Findings from this work will help policymakers and practitioners in Egypt's current advancement in the battery recycling industry.
