Abstract:
Escherichia coli is a Gram negative bacterium, that is responsible for many diseases such as urinary tract infections (UTI), diarrhea, septicaemia and pneumonia, making this organism a global public health and a food safety problem. The increased resistance of many pathogens, including E. coli, to traditionally used antibiotics has become a serious health concern. Therefore, bacteriophages have regained increasing attention as an alternative to antibiotics. Bacteriophages have long been proposed as an alternative therapy against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Current antibiotic treatments used to treat drug-resistant or/and adherent-invasive E. coli could result in severe alterations to host affecting normal microbiota in addition to continuous relapses of disease. Therapeutic approaches typically use individual phages or cocktail of phages to specifically infect and kill target bacteria without causing damage to commensal microbiota. In this study, we aim to isolate and characterize bacteriophages that target E. coli isolated from different clinical sources.
