Abstract:
Background: Good self-care practice is expected to reduce costly health crises and improve health outcomes for chronically ill patients with conditions such as asthma. This study aimed to evaluate self-care practices regarding patients with bronchial asthma. A descriptive exploratory design was utilized. Data were collected from two settings; the outpatient chest clinic at Zagazig University Hospitals and the outpatient clinics of Chest Hospital in Zagazig city. The study was conducted on one hundred and fifty (150) patients. Three tools were used for data collection; first, the Patient’s Interviewing Assessment Questionnaire for assessing demographic characteristics, medical history, lifestyle, and knowledge of study patients. The second tool was an observational checklist to assess patients’ self-care practices. The third tool was Global Initiative for Asthma severity scale (GINA) to determine the severity of asthma. Results of this study showed that more than two-thirds of studied patients were more than 40 years old (71.3%), more than half of the patients were females (62.0%), not educated (51.3%), not working (52.0%), and had no enough income (58%) and majority (80.7%) coming from rural areas. The majority of the patients had an affected lifestyle (81.3%). Overall, 32.0% of studied patients had satisfactory total knowledge regarding bronchial asthma. 17.3% of studied patients had satisfactory self-care practices regarding bronchial asthma and 70.0% of studied patients had moderate persistent asthma. Furthermore, relation analysis showed a statistically significant relation between patients’ demographic characteristics and all of the patients’ knowledge, practice, and lifestyle. Also, showed a significant positive correlation between patients’ total knowledge and patients’ total practice. Conclusion: studied patients had affected lifestyle, unsatisfactory levels of knowledge, and self-care practices regarding bronchial asthma, and 70.0% of studied patients had moderate persistent asthma. It is recommended to design and apply training programs to improve patients’ knowledge and self-care practices regarding bronchial asthma.
