Abstract:
Background: Induction of labor involves the artificial stimulation of uterine contractions with the aim of achieving vaginal delivery. Labor induction is associated with; cesearen section, instrumental delivery and neonatal intensive care unit admission, especially for nulliparous women. Aim of the study: To identify the outcomes of labor and evaluate the plan of nursing action for women underwent labor induction. Subjects & methods: Research Design: A Comparative prospective research design was carried out in the present study. Setting: This study was carried out at labor ward at the Maternity Department of Zagazig University Hospital and Al Ahrar Hospital. Subject: The study sample included 200 parturient women who received induction of labor. Tools of data collection: Five tools were used that were; a structured interviewing schedule, maternal and neonatal assessment sheet, partograph, checklist-based protocol for oxytocin and misoprostol administration in labor induction and Bishops score. Results: The results revealed that the incidence of IOL was 11.7%. Vaginal delivery was achieved in 65.0% of women. The most common indication for IOL was; post-term pregnancy in 101 (50.5%) of women. Maternal characteristics associated with risk of CS were; nulliparity (64.3%), increased maternal body mass index (p=0.01) and women age less than 25 years (95.7%). The most common complication seen in the women was uterine contractile abnormalities (30.5%), while asphyxia (9.5%) and need of resuscitation (8.0%) represented the most common complications in the newborn. Conclusion: The study concluded that successful induction was more likely with gestational age between 37weeks to less than 42 weeks. While, other variables which increased the likelihood of failed induction were maternal age less than 25 years old and elevated BMI. Recommendations: The study recommended that monitoring of the woman and her fetus closely once labor is established by labor induction is imperative.
