Abstract:
Background: Hemophilia is one of the chronic diseases affecting children. The use of game-based interventions could help them to learn self-management through improving their self‐efficacy. Aim of study: to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of educational games for improving the self-efficacy in children with hemophilia. Subjects and methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in the hematology unit at the Health Insurance Organization Hospital in Zagazig city on 50 children with hemophilia age 6-12 years. A structured interview form with a part for assessment of awareness about hemophilia and a self-efficacy scale was used in data collection. The researcher prepared an educational program with a practical part consisting of computer-based games, with a posttest at the end of the program. Results: Children’s median age was 8.0 years. Hemophilia was mostly diagnosed at <1 year age (76.0%), and only 40.0% were on regular medication. Children’s pre-intervention satisfactory knowledge rose from 30.0% to 94.0% post-intervention (p<0.001), and self-efficacy from 20.0% to 86.0% respectively (p<0.001). A strong positive correlation was found between knowledge and self-efficacy scores (r=0.709). In multivariate analysis, the study intervention was the main positive predictor of the knowledge and self-efficacy scores. Conclusion and recommendations: The educational intervention for children with hemophilia using computer-based games is effective in improving their awareness and self-efficacy. It is recommended to apply computer-based gaming in the education of children with hemophilia and other chronic diseases. Community health and pediatric nurses should be trained in the use of such games in patient education interventions. Further research is proposed to assess the long-term effects of training using computer-based gaming on the prognosis of children with hemophilia.
