Excessive Electronic Media Exposure in Developing Sleep Disorders and Behavior Problems Among Preschool Children

Abstract:
Background: The continuous revolution of electronic media has many negative effects on preschool children as sleep disorders, behavioral problems, obesity, cognitive and language problems, and social-emotional delay. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of excessive electronic media exposure in developing sleep disorders and behavior problems among preschool children. Subjects and Methods: A prospective descriptive research design was used to conduct the present study where 160 mothers of preschool children were selected by using a multistage cluster sampling technique attending four governmental nursery schools in Zagazig city. Data were collected by using an interview questionnaire sheet composed of four parts: socio-demographic data, electronic media exposure questionnaire, sleep disturbance scale for children in preschool age, and strengths and difficulties questionnaire. Results: The study results revealed that 96.7% of children who exposed to media for more than 4 hours daily have high sleep disorders at second measurement compared to first one. Regarding strengths and difficulties questionnaire, the study results revealed that there was a statistically significant positive correlation between hours of child exposure to media and negative strengths and difficulties questionnaire. Conclusion: The study concluded that increasing hours of daily exposure to media associated with high levels of sleep disorders and behavior problems among preschool children. Recommendations: It is recommended that health education programs for caregivers about the negative effects of excessive exposure to electronic media on sleep and behaviors among preschool children.
