FIRST AID AND HOSPITAL CARE PROVIDED TO BURNED CHILDREN AND THE EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Abstract:
Burns are one of the most common and devastating forms of trauma in children. Thus, providing adequate first aid and caring of burnt child properly are the most important contribution to the successful management and outcomes. The aim of the present study was to assess first aid and hospital care provided to burnt children and the expected outcomes. A descriptive study was conducted on 100 mothers accompanied their children with burn as well as 30 nurses at Burn Unit and Outpatient Clinic at both Hhia Central Hospital and Alahral Zagazig Hospital. Three tools were used in this study. The first was questionnaire sheet to assess mothers׳ and nurses׳ knowledge regarding burn and its care. The second was children assessment sheet to assess burn wound of the child. The third tool was an observational checklist to assess nurses' practice regarding care of burnt children. The results of the present study revealed that there was lack of mothers' knowledge about burns and nurses' practice regarding care of burn was unsatisfactory while their knowledge was satisfactory. Based on the results, it can be concluded that first aid provided to burnt children at accident place prior arrival at hospital was inadequate and hospital care provided to burnt children by studied nurses was unsatisfactory. Therefore, the expected outcomes of first aid and hospital care were unsatisfactory. Based on the results, it can be recommended that in-service training programs for mothers regarding burn by nurses to keep them in touch with advances in health education about burn and its care and establishing a standard of care for children with burn in hospital and clinics is essential.
