Abstract:
Propolis is a natural material obtained from various plant sources by honeybees to be used to plug cracks and crevices that occur in their hives. The functional properties of propolis mainly from several compounds that are insoluble in water, such as different phenolic constitutions (flavonoids, aromatic acids, and benzopyrenes) and terpenoids. Propolis, which tends to be active against a variety of honeybee pests and pathogens, can be considered a social immune defense mechanism and is thus potentially critical for preserving the health of the colony. The ectoparasitic Varroa induce around 45% loss of beehives. The most likely explanation of why natural propolis does not destroy the mites in the beehive is that because most of the propolis components are insoluble in the beehive's interior. Therefore, we need other form of propolis, which is characterized by its high ability to dissolve in water and oil and its high ability to penetrate the different parts of the beehives recording both narcosis and mortality. A wide variety of antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, and immunomodulatory properties have been intensively investigated for the biological activity and pharmacological properties of propolis. In terms of health, performance, and reliable food production, propolis nanoparticles, which is a natural nanomaterial, can be useful for veterinary medicine. The nanoparticles are absorbed more readily by the body because they have a size small.
