Abstract:
Some behavioural activities of 33 native Egyptian buffaloes were studied in an open house system. The behavioural patterns studied suggested to affect both production and reproduction processes.these patterns were:: A) Ingestive behaviour : l- The ingestive activities of buffalo đuring 4 months of observation. showed that the mean frequency of feeding was 29.08+3.309 while the mean of feeding time (min.) was 237.8+26.516 min. per 12 hours. -The mean frequency of drinking was 4.6+0.517 per 122 hours while the mean of drinking time was 10.8+1.156 min -The mean frequency of rumination was 4. 4+0.49783 while mean of rumination time was 225.5+26.113 min. per 12 hours.4-the correlation coefficient between feeding frequ ency and drinking frequency was positive and significant at P<0.05 while the correlation coefficient between feeding time and drinking time was positive but not significant 5-Correlation coefficient between rumination frequency and feeding frequency as well as the correlation coefficient between feeding time and rumination time was negative and not significant -The number of boluses was parallel to the time6 minutes lasted in rumination process. The increase in feeding frequency was accompanied by decrease in rumination frequency -The frequency and time of prehension was decreased7 from the first hour of observation gradually meanwhile the rumination frequency and rumination time was gradually increased -The walking frequency was increased gradually while 8 the time of walking was gradually decreased from lst to the 4th hour. -The time of idling and lying was gradually increased9 and reached its maximum at the mid-day B) Temperament l- The milk yield and milking rate were higher in docile animal than nervous one, while the milking time was longer in nervous animal. C) Parturient behaviour l- The main behavioural traits in pregnant buffalo just before birth were straining; urination and defecation as well as shifting of position followed by changes in ingestive. activities and perambulation. 2-The mean time of some behavioural activities dis played by buffaloes (Restlessness, Appearance of chorio-all antoic sac; Rupture of chorio-allantoic sac and intense abd omen al straining) from the immence of parturition to delivery of the calf was longer in the younger dams than in the older one -The most behavioural traits during birth was3 standing up and lying down followed by pawing the ground, and the parturition in lying position was more frequent than in standing position -The length of labour was longer in young animal4 group than older one. 5-lst standing and lst feeding after birth in case of dams gave female calf were quicker than that which gave male calf -The site of lst licking of calf was head and neck6 forming 43.75% followed by hind quarters and back and shoulders forming 31.25% and 25%, respectively -The mean duration of some behavioural patterns of7 newly born calves during the lst six hours of its life(1lst attempt to stand; successful stand, udder approach and suckling ) showed that the male calf were quicker than the female calf . -The mean birth weight in male calves was 42.38±15.88 Kg but in female calves was 3 3.82+l3.29 Kg 9-The mean weaning weight (at 8 weeks of age ) in male calves was 83.56431.2 Kg but in female calves was 73.08+27.25 Kg
