Abstract:
Background: Diabetic Foot Care Behaviors (DFCB) is the fundamental component of diabetic foot complications prevention. The aim of study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-management support program on improving diabetic foot care behaviors for patients with diabetes mellitus at Zagazig University Hospital. A quasi experimental research design was used. A purposive sample of 70 patients with diabetic foot. The patients were randomly assigned to either the control (n = 35) or the study (n = 35) group( using matched criteria of foot ulcer history and foot problems). Four tools were used for collection of data, patient's assessment Questionnaire, Questionnaire about patient knowledge about diabetes mellitus and foot care, Self-reported practice questionnaire and Diabetic Foot Care Behaviors Questionnaire. Result: The study finding revealed that more half of patients in the study and control groups were males (51.4% and 60.0% respectively) and 57.1% of patients in the study group, 28.6% of patients in the control group their age <50 years, there was statistical significant relationship between patient knowledge and practice where (89.6%) of patients who had unsatisfactory knowledge had inadequate self reported practices. There was Statistical significant difference between the study group and the control group after the intervention regarding knowledge of diabetes mellitus as (17.1%) of patients in the study group had unsatisfactory knowledge in the post test while(60%) of patients in the control group had unsatisfactory knowledge in the post test. All of patients in the study group had adequate self reported practices while (37.1%) of patients in the control group had adequate self reported practices related to DM, All of patients in the study group had adequate practices related to foot-care behaviors among diabetic patients after the intervention. While more than half of patients (40.0%) in the control group had adequate practices related to foot-care behaviors who had routine nursing care with p value <0.001*. Conclusion: The self management support program showed an improvement in patients' knowledge which reflected an improvement on their self reported practices and diabetic foot care behaviors in post phase. Recommended to apply educational nursing intervention program regarding importance of foot care and to impart knowledge on foot care to improve DFCB so as to prevent diabetic foot ulcers or other foot complications.
