Abstract:
The weight of fill above shallow tunnels and other external loads represent problem in design of tunnels and increase stresses on it. Soil which used as a fill above tunnels can be replaced by a light weight and compressed material such as expanded polystyrene (EPS) Geofoam to achieve static stability by reducing the acting load rather than increase the tunnel stiffness. This research used the local Geofoam to reduce loads on shallow tunnels. The material properties of locallyGeofoam a unavailable . There is also a shortage in the design parameters that should be driven based on information from verified model, a comprehensive laboratory testing program on the local EPS Geofoam was planned. Three different values of the density (25, 30, and 35 kg/m3) of EPS Geofoam are selected to investigate the different mitigation effect on reducing loads on tunnels for different types of EPS Geofoam. A numerical model was developed and verified to simulate shallow tunnels with EPS inclusion. Parametric studies were conducted using EPS with various positions of two tunnels , thicknesses of EPS to tunnel depth ratios and densities of EPS. It was found that the moment acting on tunnel sections increase with spacing increase up to 6m then remain constant approximatlly . The reduction on moment acting on tunnel sections using t/h = 0.4 exceeded 48%,while the corresponding settelement at ground surface was acceptable.
