Setting Characteristics of Blended Cement Pastes Used in High Performance & High Strength Concretes

Abstract:
Blended cements are gaining popularity in the field of construction where they improve some fresh characteristics of concrete mixes hence allowing for better quality concreting. This paper deals with determining the setting times of blended cements, where the research variables are the percent of blend of the cement where a portion of cement is replaced with a supplementary cementing mineral admixture such as fly ash, silica fume, blast furnace slag or any other type. Initial and final setting times of the blended cement pastes are determined experimentally and compared to the reference ordinary Portland cement paste with 0% blend. Results reveal that consistency of the paste changes with the percent blend where the higher the blend percent the higher the standard consistency due to the higher fineness of the supplementary cementitious material added. Also, the initial and final setting times are reduced, accordingly addition of a plasticizer is recommended to prolong the initial and final setting times in order to achieve the required quality when concreting.
