Chloride Induced Corrosion of Structures in Marine Environments

Abstract:
Recently the field of concrete maintenance and repair has flourished due to several case of deterioration of structures which were all mainly due to reinforcement corrosion. This paper deals with assessing the effect of chloride induces corrosion on reinforced concrete beams. And assess adopting different techniques to prevent chloride induced corrosion which include externally coating the reinforcement with an epoxy resin or engulfing the reinforcement in a superior concrete. Results reveal that chloride induced corrosion leads to rapid reduction in load carrying capacity of the reinforced beams. Also using external coating with epoxy resin and engulfing the reinforcement in a superior concrete help prevent corrosion, which elongates the service life of the structural elements.
