The Association between Depression, Self- Esteem and Quality of Life among Patients with End Stage Renal Disease
Undergoing Hemodialysis Therapy

Abstract
Background: Depression and low self-esteem is the utmost common psychological problems encountered in patients with end-stage renal disease. The quality of life of patients requiring dialysis is influenced significantly, since it is connected with alterations in their daily habits and in their lifestyle. Aim of the study: To identify the association between depression, self esteem and quality of life among patients with end stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis therapy.
Research Design: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. Setting: This study was conducted at the hemodialysis unit at Zagazig University Hospital. Subjects: one hundred patients were enrolled in the present study. Tools for data collection: Four tools were utilized for collection of data: Socio demographic data sheet, Beck Depression Inventory Scale, Selfesteem Scale, and Quality of Life questionnaire. Results: The majority of the studied sample was more than 40 years of age. Slightly more than two third of the patients had severe depression symptoms, nearly 3 quarters of patients had low quality of life, and most of them had low selfesteem. Also, there was a highly statistically significant positive correlation between duration of hemodialysis and Age. Meanwhile, the age had statistically significant negative correlation with No of dialysis. Conclusion: There was positive statistically significant correlation between scores of depression and Quality of life. Also, there were positive statistically significant correlation between scores of Self-esteem, Quality of life, and age. Recommendations: The study recommended that, establishing psychological counseling and psychotherapy for patients and regular psychological evaluation of all end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis for early detection of any deviations from normal.
